Spoilers for last night's "Wilfred" after the jump:
One of the things I really like about "Wilfred" so far is that it does so many different things well. Take this latest episode. Sure, it nailed the broad humor that the man-in-a-dog-suit concept all but demands (the pelican scene, for example), but it also continued to explore the strange friendship between Wilfred and Ryan.
Yes, it was pretty standard stuff: in order to make Jenna like him, Ryan agrees to betray Wilfred's trust and take him to the vet. But it was done well, and delivered some big laughs. More important, however, is the fact that it developed Ryan a bit more. We learned about his tendency to push everyone in his life away, a tendency that Wilfred is apparently going to try and help him with. My concern last week was that this was going to be a one-joke premise, but won't be too worried about that as long as the show can deliver solid, character-based comedy in addition to the dog suit humor.
All that said, the episode did wrap things up in perhaps too neat of a bow by introducing Jenna's boyfriend at the exact moment that Ryan appears ready to burst out of his shell. It's obvious that this is being set up as a season-long storyline, but I generally don't care for shows throwing too many roadblocks in front of a potential romance just for the sake of it. If you're going to get the characters together, just do it already. Still, good stuff.
- I'm starting to realize that I really don't have a whole lot to say about this show on a weekly basis. It's probably going to become one of those shows that I'll check in on every so often but won't review every week.
